Delaware Bay
This beautiful area 25 minutes from the centre of Nelson will be our ‘home’ for the first three days of Walk Nelson NZ. We settle in to our accommodation on the shores of the Wakapuaka Estuary overlooking Pepin Island, and Cable and Delaware Bays.
Our walks will include a half day exploring the local area, walking through bush and farmland up to a ridge line which will give you a splendid view of this historically interesting and spectacular area north of Nelson – a unique and very special area few visitors to Nelson get to see!
Cable Bay Walkway will be a second day’s walk – you will really get a feel for this landscape as you look down at the ancient Nelson Boulder Bank snaking it’s 13 km path into Nelson Harbour. This is a unique landform and has been naturally created over 10,000 years. Nelson’s coastal native forest and bird life will feature on this spectacular walk – walkers will enjoy our local guide’s enthusiasm and knowledge.
Day Three sees us drive to Duncan Bay in the Marlborough Sounds: our starting point for a day’s exploration of these ancient flooded river valleys formed over millions of years.
Lush coastal forest and secluded bush lined coves feature. Giant rimus, nikau palms, NZ beech and pungas are among some of the native trees you will have the opportunity to wonder at. Marlborough Sounds local, Clive Harvey, will meet us with his boat in Nydia Bay. No better person to give us history of the area en route to the fishing village of Havelock. Grant will meet us here and drive us home via Pelorus River to Delaware Bay.
This will be a memorable day in a unique area of Top of the South Island!
